I never write reviews, but much like Cthulhu stirred from his eternal slumber in Rlyeh, this game was too amazing for me to remain silent.
I have, for nearly two decades now, tried my hardest to enjoy JRPGs. However, I was never satisfied with the gameplay of "I hit x and the computer decides it was a critical hit." Add to that trope-filled stories with bland, often emo characters, and I just never made it through the majority; the ones I did complete felt lacking in substance (oh, boy, 2/3 of my total game time is random battles. Yaaaaaaaaay...)
This was completely fixed by CStW. Random battles are limited to 25/map, but can be refreshed if you want to grind more (and with the monster designs and cool moves present, I actually HAVE.) The characters are engaging, hilarious cliches from other RPGs, and it even spoofs the "becoming the greatest hero in the world" storyline that comprises literally 70% of the Finals Fantasy. Stat boosts are used immediately so they arent buried in your inventory. You can teleport out of dungeons to any city youve visited. HP is fully restored after every battle, and more MP is the quicker you finish. (This is where the challenge comes in, as overusing your MP leaves you vulnerable in later fights.) You can save ANY TIME in the game; something sorely lacking in traditional RPGs. Remember the portable save points from FFVII? That there were like TWO OF IN THE ENTIRE GAME AND HAD TO BE EXPENDED TO SAVE?
The humor absolutely is the best part of CStW. In the first city, you run into a library that turns Lovecrafts work into childrens rhymes and romance novels. If you area fan of either the Cthulhu Mythos or the rest of Lovecrafts work, there is endless entertainment to find in this game. Should be called Cthulhu BROCKS the world.
Long story short: BUY THIS IMMEDIATELY. ITS $2. WHATS WRONG WITH YOU!?
