Dragon quest :D

This game reminds me of the early dragon warrior games, the commentary is cheesy and fun. The messages are cute and funny, this is honestly my favorite turn based rpg Ive played and leveling up gives options in a way that is refreshing from games similar to this, I do not regret buying it and plan to replay once finished

Great RPG Needs Screen Update!

Love this RPG. Even though it doesnt have maps and the story is a little linear, this has a good amount of depth, great combat, and it is gorgeous to look at. Hoping Zeboyd and TinkerHouse will update for iPhone 5 screen optimization. Very small box during cutscenes. Was great on my iPhone 4 but not on my new iPhone 5s.

Fixes for game

Game is worth a five star review it just needs som updates. Support for new device screen size. The option to move around and adjust size of controls in the option menu.

An honor to 16-bit Classic RPGs

While poking fun at the 16-bit Classic RPG genre, this game is nevertheless a loving tribute to the same. From a hilarious narrator to a solid battle system (battles are quick and intense--no hour-long marathon boss battles), Cthulhu Saves the World is fun to play and a "must download" for Classic RPG fans (e.g. Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest). Great game!!

This is the greatest RPG Ive played.

I never write reviews, but much like Cthulhu stirred from his eternal slumber in Rlyeh, this game was too amazing for me to remain silent. I have, for nearly two decades now, tried my hardest to enjoy JRPGs. However, I was never satisfied with the gameplay of "I hit x and the computer decides it was a critical hit." Add to that trope-filled stories with bland, often emo characters, and I just never made it through the majority; the ones I did complete felt lacking in substance (oh, boy, 2/3 of my total game time is random battles. Yaaaaaaaaay...) This was completely fixed by CStW. Random battles are limited to 25/map, but can be refreshed if you want to grind more (and with the monster designs and cool moves present, I actually HAVE.) The characters are engaging, hilarious cliches from other RPGs, and it even spoofs the "becoming the greatest hero in the world" storyline that comprises literally 70% of the Finals Fantasy. Stat boosts are used immediately so they arent buried in your inventory. You can teleport out of dungeons to any city youve visited. HP is fully restored after every battle, and more MP is the quicker you finish. (This is where the challenge comes in, as overusing your MP leaves you vulnerable in later fights.) You can save ANY TIME in the game; something sorely lacking in traditional RPGs. Remember the portable save points from FFVII? That there were like TWO OF IN THE ENTIRE GAME AND HAD TO BE EXPENDED TO SAVE? The humor absolutely is the best part of CStW. In the first city, you run into a library that turns Lovecrafts work into childrens rhymes and romance novels. If you area fan of either the Cthulhu Mythos or the rest of Lovecrafts work, there is endless entertainment to find in this game. Should be called Cthulhu BROCKS the world. Long story short: BUY THIS IMMEDIATELY. ITS $2. WHATS WRONG WITH YOU!? Phnglui mglwnafh Cthulhu Rlyeh wgahnagl fhtagn!!!!

Fun game but some issues

Its a fun RPG. I havent played much but if the devs are reading these reviews, they can make this a bit better. First off, the screen isnt formatted for the iPhone 5 series so there are two black bars on each side. The other issue is that the d-pad is WAY to small. I frequently shift the position of my finger ever so slightly while going left, and the game thinks Im trying to go another direction all the sudden. Increasing the d-pad size would make playing this a lot better. These issues might not be a problem on an iPad though. I recommend it to everyone, regardless of my complaints.

Average game with pleasant nostalgia

I go as far back as the original Final Fantasy Legend on the Gameboy and my all time favorite RPG is FF6 on the SNES. This game certainly lives up in terms of stirring up fond memories, but as a game itself it is just a decent experience. The comedic script made me laugh out loud a few times, but overall was surprisingly bland.

Needs a larger D-Pad.

I know this game hasnt been updated in forever but hopefully they add a option for a larger dpad :( I have large fingers

Fun classic dungeon crawl

Love the writing and the humor. Some of the dungeons and combat drags a bit -- but thats part of the classic fun. Liked the designer comments too.

No cloud save and no update for two years.

Two years without an update and still no cloud save. The game is no longer supported. Was awesome but now it just feels like abandonware. Update: The game is fantastic. One of, if not the best RPGs I have played on the iOS simply because it plays great and its original, not some 80s remake. Im totally loving it and would buy the next RPG by the same company without a second thought. They even fixed the portrait orientation issue! Now you can rotate your iPhone and flip the screen so the speaker is on whatever side you want. Great job!

Save up for some REAL old school games!

I appreciate what the developer was going for, here, but his willful disregard for plot and narrative is insulting. All of the characters are, at best, one dimensional. And thats kind of insulting in a TWO dimensional game. Whats worse is that the developer actually draws attention to first grade level video game concepts. At one point, for example, the developer brags about how "difficult "it was for him (and his team) to render characters walking under a bridge. In 16 bit graphics. I learned that in my first year programming class. Dont get me wrong, I appreciate the throwback to Super Nintendo games, here, and the music score is pretty good. But there are so DAMNED MANY PROBLEMS. One is that the enemies level up IN BATTLE. If, for some reason, you are unable to defeat enemies in the first two rounds? Its pretty much guaranteed that you wont beat them after that. My advice to you is to not buy this game. Its an exercise in frustration, and a waste of money. Does it have potential? Absolutely! But so do all of Lovecrafts ideas. Theyre just waiting for someone with more than a B – movie scale of experience to do them justice. Thats why Im giving this game a two star, and not a one. I have no idea how this game was so highly rated. If you want to waste your money then by all means do so! I guarantee, though, that you will feel as frustrated and empty as I did.

Great game but...

I have been playing this game and it is so fun. The problem is that my mp drains so fast. It would be great if mp filled up at the end of a battle, or how about a potion that refills mp. Come on there is a hp potion, where is the mp?

Excellent parody/tribute/update to classic RPGs

A must for RPG enthusiasts who cut their teeth on Dragon Quest and old-school Final Fantasy games. Knowledge of Lovecrafts mythos not necessary, but sure to tickle those who do belong to that crowd. Good: Zeboyd Games has a great working knowledge of what has and has not aged well about the games they clearly drew inspiration from. Random encounters have a limit per area (a feature every retro-style RPG should have from now on), to eliminate unnecessary grinding. A story with a clever conceit and a few laugh-out-loud moments (Cthulhus hilariously backhanded motivation for heroism is genius). Interesting "insanity" mechanic thats risky but useful. The music ranges from pleasant to legendarily amazing (Azathoths theme is a masterpiece of symphonic metal that leaves "One-Winged Angel" in the dust as far as final boss anthems go). The multiple modes have enough substantial differences from the main game to add replay value. The Bad: For a game as littered with jokes as Cthulhu Saves the World, its unfortunate how few of them stick. A few moments of comedic gold aside, the writers just arent as clever as they seem to think they are, eliciting more groans than giggles. Except for the protagonist, the one-dimensional characters are forgettable. The character art is ugly, showing significantly less craft than the enemy sprites. It may not be a five-star game Ill keep on my iPhone forever, but its still a worthy investment of time and cash.

Combat...

This game is very funny, but the combat is broken. Every round you dont kill the enemy they all increase in damage by 10%. Why?! Its so frustrating when their power gets to 160% and they kill you in one shot! The game is trying to make me hate it

Lots of fun

Fun game cheap price. The only thing that is a little annoying is the fact that its easy to get lost in the dungeons because there arent too many landmarks. However, I am sure that is on purpose, I just hate feeling like I dont know where i am going. In fact at one point I completely missed a dungeon and had to back track because i kept getting killed. Still the game is cute, and has funny dialogue. I especially recommend this if you is familiar with HP Lovecraft.,

Amazing adventure

Massive, addictive fun. This game is a STEAL. One of the best IOS games Ive ever played, the comedy is absolutely brilliant. Superb offering from this developer.
